Nursing unit managers are instrumental in overseeing patient care activities and maintaining high standards in hospitals. This paper aims to investigate the impact of nursing unit managers' activities on the delivery of quality patient care in South African hospitals. The study utilizes a methodical approach to analyze the activities of these managers in hospital settings.
In order to become a unit manager in a hospital, it is typically required to have a minimum of five years of direct patient care experience. Additionally, many hospitals prefer to promote staff nurses to this position before considering external candidates. While not all unit managers have graduate degrees in nursing, some do choose to pursue this advanced education.
For this study, a total of 36 hospitals were included, and within each hospital, one unit from the medical, surgical, paediatric, and maternity units was chosen. Informed consent was obtained from the unit managers, and their activities were observed for a period of 2 hours on the survey day. Each activity was recorded minute-by-minute.
This study aimed to observe and document the activities of hospital nursing unit managers. The data collected from these managers can provide valuable insights into their daily routines and responsibilities.
The detailed analysis of the activities performed by hospital nursing unit managers can contribute to a better understanding of their role in healthcare organizations.
Unit managers play a crucial role in the medical field as they oversee and provide guidance to the nurses, medical staff, and patients. They serve as mentors, communicators, and sources of support for all those involved. Their years of experience and expertise in nursing make them highly respected and valuable professionals within the medical community.
It is important to continuously enhance your communication skills in order to effectively handle challenging patient encounters. To be prepared for potential conflicts that may arise, it is recommended to provide your staff with conflict management training. If the encounter reaches a point where it becomes threatening or violent, it is advisable to call security or the appropriate emergency services.
The researcher has extensive experience working in public hospitals, where they observed nurse unit managers choosing not to address conflicts with unhappy nurses in order to maintain a peaceful work environment.
On multiple occasions, the nurse unit managers faced challenges in effectively resolving conflicts within their nursing units.
Therefore, the researcher implemented the use of scenarios to explore and understand the conflict management practices employed by nurse unit managers in these situations.
The nurse unit managers emphasized the importance of prioritizing patient care.
Several participants expressed their intention to promote open communication among nurses to address issues collectively and acknowledge when there has been wrongdoing before involving the nurse unit manager.
The use of scenarios was employed to examine the practices of conflict management among nurse units.
Challenging patient encounters can have a detrimental effect on the quality of life of everyone involved and may result in responses that have a negative impact on patient care. It is essential for nurses to empathize with patients, recognizing that they are dealing with more than just their present symptoms or diagnosis. By effectively managing challenging patient encounters, nurses can promote positive interactions and improve patient outcomes.
